Duane Mayes is the Health & Social Services Planner III for the Governor’s Council of Disabilities and Special Education (GCDSE) and supports the Executive Director in managing and supervising the Council.   Duane is staff to the Developmental Disabilities and the Rural ADHOC Committees.  Duane and the Executive Director of the Council function as the Liaisons to the Mental Health Trust Authority, bringing to them recommendations to improve the lives of Alaskans who experience a developmental disability. 

Prior to joining the Council, Duane worked for 26 years in the field of Rehabilitation.  He has worked both in the state and private sector providing rehabilitation services to Alaskans.  In the last 17 years Duane has and continues to teach American Sign Language courses through the University of Alaska Anchorage and provides an assortment of trainings in all aspects of rehabilitation statewide.

Duane is the son of Deaf Parents and is fluent in American Sign Language.   He was raised in Wisconsin and earned his Masters degree in Vocational Rehabilitation.  He is married and has two adult daughters, both born and raised in Alaska.  Duane continues to be actively involved in the disability community.  He is an active outdoor person and enjoys hiking, backpacking, and snowshoeing with his best friend, his wife.
