From 2001-2004, in Anchorage, 71 injury hospitalizations were recorded involving young people under age 18 due to a bicycle crash injury. In about half of the cases (36) no helmet was worn. Of those 36, 16 (or 44%) sustained a traumatic brain injury. Eleven of the 71 were wearing a helmet and only two of them sustained a head injury. These statistics show that un-helmeted bicyclers were just over three and a half times more likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury as helmeted riders.

Out of a total 19 traumatic brain injuries for young people under age 18 in Anchorage during the four-year period due to bicycle crash injuries, three billed their hospital charges to Medicaid, or 19%.

Out of the total 36 un-helmeted bicycle crash patients under age 18 in Anchorage during the four years, 10 (28%) billed Medicaid for their hospital charges.
